There are a lot of homeless and people with mental heath issues around, so theft is not uncommon. Don't leave a bike alone too long though. The city is getting more bike friendly every year and bikes are fun. So - Don't get a car if you don't need one, but I imagine you will. That said, I'm moving far, far away next week for a job opportunity and I will always have fond memories of my 36 years here. I was born here and have lived here my entire life, but I am not a beach person and I don't enjoy hot weather (at all).
I'll preface this by saying I'm not the typical San Diego Native. Mission Beach is just Mission Beach though, and if knew why I'd tell ya.įor a quick and solid dose of San Diegoness, I recommend a day of touring including a round trip on the Coronado ferry, a walk through Balboa Park, a beer at Stone Liberty Station, a California burrito from basically anywhere, then eat it on the beach in OB. There's a lot of jobs in Sorrento Valley, so commuter traffic is congested around there on the 805.Īnd yes, we do all call freeways "the _" lol. Rush hour traffic heads away from downtown, not toward it like most other cities. Parking sucks just about everywhere, so if you can carpool or ride-share when you go out you'll save yourself some frustration. Same could be said about beer for the most part. Don't be afraid of the sketchy looking hole in the wall spots. If you ask for recommendations you're going to get different answers every time depending where folks live. You can literally go anywhere for a decent burrito.
Pretty much all of the other touristy things are still popular with locals, especially the zoo and Balboa Park. The tourist traps are Seaport Village and Old Town. You may arrive and find the weather pleasant, like mid to low 70s most days and think I'm crazy - then BAM, Santa Anas and a 90-degree day out of nowhere.

There's going to be hot days through October, so if you don't have AC, buy a fan or portable AC if your landlord allows.
